About Caroline Kampfraath Daily life: the work of Caroline Kampfraath The vision on daily life of Dutch sculptor Caroline Kampfraath drives her work. Any human being, at any point in history until today, will develop expectations. Many expectations will remain unfulfilled, despite striving and invested energy. Anxiety is bound to develop, from humble to stressful levels. The confrontation with those feelings is unavoidable. This vision precipitates in sculptures, installations and drawings. Her work is conceptual and symbolic. It addresses human fears and unfulfilled expectations. She uses different sorts of materials, such as natural and artificial resin, lead, plaster, glass, bronze and stone, as well as objects of daily life. Her work amplifies the big life events, as does the foetus in “So what if I play and fall”; it mirrors change, symbolised by the once trendy, now controversial fox fur in “Damage”; it lends perspective to our expectations, with the ultimate waiting expressed in “Waiting for a whisper”. Elements such as tables, coat hangers and ironed shirts symbolise the daily environment in which these fundamental emotions take place. With her work, she pushes the buttons that all of us carry within us and that sometimes break through the surface into the open. The use of daily life objects in her pieces brings the expectations and disillusions close to you, the spectator, even if you have not experienced them yourself.
